For Engineering, we will achieve this by ensuring: That all UTC Leeds students are work-ready, developing a range of technical and employability skills that will make them sought after in the region.
Overview
Students are taught practical and theory skills through project-based work. Students develop engineering employability skills to build up a portfolio of evidence to support their learning.
Our Engineering curriculum is broken down into ‘non-negotiables’ – the vital areas that a student needs to master in that subject. These non-negotiables underpin the learning throughout the duration of the study and our students understand that after developing competency in each strand, they will aim to develop mastery in each. The learning is coherently sequenced across the 4-year plan and mapped cross-curricular, and our sequence of learning plans specifies which non-negotiables are the learning foci and/or the knowledge that students will gain.
Technical Level Engineering
Exam board: AQA
Year 12
When you start Year 12, you will have two options in engineering:
- Single engineering
- Double Engineering
Single engineering is the equivalent of 1 A Level (360 hours of learning)
This means you will have 5 hours of engineering a week, studying towards an AQA Level 3 Foundation Technical Level in Engineering.
You will complete ½ the course in the first year.
You will complete the course in the second year.
Over the course you will study 4 units. Engineering Design, Production & Manufacture and Mechanical Systems. By the end of this course you should be able to design mechanical systems, operate numerous pieces of equipment including CNC and CAD / CAM machines and be able to operate CAD software to produce engineering drawings.
You will have an exam in Material Science at the end of the first year.
Double engineering is the equivalent of 2 A Levels (720 hours of learning)
This means you will have 10 hours of engineering a week studying towards an AQA Level 3 Technical Level in Engineering.
You will complete an AQA Level 3 Foundation Technical Level in Engineering in the first year (the same as single engineering, above).
Year 13
Single engineering is the equivalent of 1 A Level (360 hours of learning)
You will carry on with 5 hours of engineering a week, studying towards an AQA Level 3 Foundation Technical Level in Engineering.
You will complete the course in the second year.
Double engineering is the equivalent of 2 A Levels (720 hours of learning)
You will carry one with 10 hours of engineering a week studying towards an AQA Level 3 Technical Level in Engineering.
At the end of year 12 you will be asked to specialise in Design or Mechatronics. Both courses have an exam in maths. It is recommended that you have a minimum of level 5 in maths at GCSE to be able to access this course.
In mechatronics, you will study the following units: mechatronic project management, mechatronic control systems and Programming for engineers. By the end of this course you should be able to run projects with pneumatic systems driven by PLCs.
In design, you will study the following units: design visualisation, advanced design for manufacture, and design engineer project management. By the end of the course you should be able to use most common CAD systems, design, cost and understand how a drawing office operates.
