Meet our employer partner MPM Ltd
Leeds-based MPM Limited is an employer partner of UTC Leeds. The company manufactures fibreglass and Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) products, which can be anything from windows for lorries to elements of wood-fired ovens. We spoke to Beka Hayley and James Marr from the Finishing Team and Jessica Sugden, Business Admin Apprentice, at our recent open event.
What sorts of things does MPM make?
We can really make anything. If you come to us with a design, we make a pattern and a mould and then we can start making products. The company sells parts to businesses all over the world.
Why are you supporting UTC Leeds?
We support UTC Leeds to promote apprenticeships and share our knowledge and skills with the younger generation so we can carry on growing.
Fibreglass manufacturing is not as well-known as other trades so we’re trying to promote it, so that it becomes a standard option that young people might want to come and do.
Do you have many apprentices and what do they do?
We’re a young team overall. It’s a very dynamic company.
Our apprentices do a general manufacturing apprenticeship but then learn the specialist areas in addition.
What sort of things do you do with the UTC?
We were in the UTC only recently participating in an employer panel as part of the Leeds Manufacturing Live event. We were answering students’ questions on careers in the manufacturing industry.
We have also hosted visits and workshops for UTC students and had UTC students on work experience at MPM. We are working with the UTC in a variety of ways.
