Meet David Barran, Teacher of Engineering and Product Design
Why did you decide to start teaching at the UTC?
After working as Head of Design & Technology in a private school, I wanted to challenge myself with a different area of technology – this being the Engineering side.
With everything that is on offer at UTC, such as the fantastic equipment and facilities, I jumped at the change to be part of such as dynamic team.
What is it that interests you about your subject/area?
The creative side of Engineering is what interests me the most – I’ve been creative from an early age and I still love drawing and making unusual and interesting products.
I’m passionate about Engineering and enjoy sharing ideas with students, it’s great to see them getting creative!
How did you get into teaching?
I decided to become a teacher after my model making and design course at university – I wanted to share my knowledge and skills with the next generation. I’ve now been teaching for 16 years with experience in graphics, resistant materials, electronics, textiles and systems & control.
What have you noticed since working at the UTC?
I’ve noticed great relationships between staff and students at the UTC – which consequently results in a great atmosphere! I’ve also noticed that the teachers all have very different backgrounds and experiences within their own field – which is inspirational to both myself and the students.
What are your ambitions for your department/subject?
We aim to develop a curriculum that helps our students to secure places at university or gain top apprenticeships, so that they can go on to have successful careers.
I also hope to help and support other members of my team to make UTC Leeds the best Engineering college in the UK.
What kind of projects do the students work on in your subject?
Within Product Design, students have created items from bike racks to climbing equipment. It varies depending on what the student is interested in, and whether they have their own client to work with or one of the partnership companies we have links with.
What has been your highlight of working at the UTC?
Working with fantastic colleagues has been my highlight. Being a one-man band as Head of Design & Technology in a private school made me miss being a part of a team – sharing ideas and supporting each other is key.
What do you think are the strengths of a UTC?
Fantastic facilities and very supportive staff!
Why should students come to the UTC?
I think students should study at UTC Leeds because no other college has the state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated staff. If I was 14 years-old, I would love to have had this opportunity.
